Lock 1855 is named after the historic date when the Bordeaux council declared the “first growths”(they are the best wines in the world).
It was also a date when they declared what varieties could be used in Bordeaux to be declared a wine of origin Bordeaux. The five varieties are Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Napoléon was the one to brought these measures in place.
He was a fond lover of wine and his legacy to the wine industry still stretches to today. Merlot and Cabernet were chosen for this blend because we believed that the smooth character of the Merlot would be perfect with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.
